Home offices & paperwork
Files, cables and piles sorted into a desk that actually works.Files, cables and piles sorted into a desk that actually works.

What it usually involves
- Every drawer, pile and box emptied so the paperwork is all in one place
- Sorting into act-on, keep, scan and shred — and shredding what is done
- A simple filing system in plain words, not accountant language
- Cables, chargers and tech sorted, with the mystery ones tested first
Roughly how long
Usually three to five hours. Years of unopened mail, or paperwork for a business, can run to two sessions.
What you're left with
A desk you can work at and a filing system you can actually find things in — including the one document you need at tax time.

FAQS
Questions about home offices & paperwork
The ATO generally asks you to keep tax records for five years, so that is the rule of thumb we work to. Anything you are unsure about we scan and keep digitally rather than throwing out.
No. I sort by document type and envelope shape, not by reading contents. Anything that needs a decision goes to you unopened.
Partly. I can set up a scanning routine and a sensible folder structure, but I am not an IT service — for anything involving accounting software you are better off with your bookkeeper.
